Dates of Images:
Pre-Event: 04/20/2024
Post-Event: 05/06/2024, 05/07/2024, 05/09/2024, 05/15/2024, 05/21/2024 Time Zone: GMT (local crossing time of ~1:00 pm)
Summary:
These are true color images from PACE OCI (made with R=645 nm, G=555 nm, and B=450 nm) of the 2024 flooding in Brazil. The images show how the flood developed from a pre-flood day (04/20/2024) to the proceeding flooded days (through 05/21/2024) at ~1:00 local time (the overpass of the instrument). The changing extent of the floodwaters, along with what looks to be the amount of suspended sediment, is especially clear. Note that these RGB images were enhanced with the same criteria, which can cause some days to be brighter or darker than others which potentially can be interpreted as change, especially if clouds are present in the image.
Suggested Use:
True Color: These images show how the area would look to the eye, and so can be interpreted as such. Key portions of the image include the likely sediment injection into the Lagoa dos Patos due to the flooding, and the changing amount of floodwater (and sediment) in the Jacui River and its tributaries as time gets further from the initial flood day.
False Color: These images were made to enhance the presence of water in an image. Vegetation/bare earth will look bright green or yellowish, water will look deep blue, and sediment in water will look teal. Clouds will be either white, reddish, or light blue. Key portions of the image include the likely sediment injection into the Lagoa dos Patos due to the flooding (tealing-up of the lagoon), and the changing amount of floodwater in the Jacui River and its tributaries as time gets further from the initial flood day.
